“If you fear or hate the dentist, read this….”

Patients who avoid the dentist out of fear or time restrictions have options to chose from during their dental procedures in order to remain calm and comfortable throughout the entire process.

Two of the most popular sedation offered by dentists is Nitrous Oxide and Conscious Oral Sedation.

Nitrous Oxide also known as Laughing gas is a sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over the patient’s nose to help them relax. Sedation option that dentists offer to their patients to help them be more comfortable during certain procedures.  This option is not intended for patient’s to sleep.  The patient will still be able to hear the dentist throughout the process.

Conscious Oral Sedation is a type of sedation taken by mouth. This is usually the most popular choice offered by sedation dentists within their office that is used by most patients.

How are they administered and how easy is it to get it done?

For patients who are taking Nitrous Oxide, they are usually asked to breathe normally through a mask that goes over their nose and within a few minutes, they will start to feel the effects of nitrous oxide. Your sedation dentist will place this mask over your nose. The gas is usually inhaled through the nose and released through the mouth.

Once the procedure has been completed, the sedative agent will wear off quick without any side effect or recovery time.

Oral Conscious Sedation is a type of sedation in the form of pill usually taken an hour before the procedure takes place. With this type of sedation, the patient is able to hear the dentist however he or she will feel really sleepy. Recovery time is a bit longer and the patient may need someone to drive them home.
